How much drag should you actually set for your line class?

Why the fraction stays well under 100 percent

Setting a reel's drag at the line's full rated strength leaves no margin at all for the additional load the line and the fish add on top of it, which is the entire reason the convention sits at a quarter to a third rather than near the top.

Water pressure, rod angle and a running fish can each add load on top of the reel's own setting, which is why drag never runs at anywhere near 100 percent of the line rating.
